Just The Tonic: Growing, Healing, Evolving

Calm. Nurturing. Grounding.

We met Karen Cox five years ago when we wrote our first Spotlight on Just the Tonic Holistic Therapies. At the time, she had gained a sturdy foothold in Rugby as a safe and welcoming space for her clients to rest and relax. Her main aim was to pamper the residents of her hometown through massage, beauty treatments, and a growing range of holistic therapies.

Karen founded Just the Tonic in 2019, bringing with her over ten years of experience in the industry. As with many small businesses, the Covid-19 pandemic presented a huge challenge. Steady growth was suddenly halted by lockdown restrictions, and the future began to feel uncertain (spoiler: she kept going and is now stronger than ever).

This period of uncertainty became a turning point. With the need for emotional and mental wellbeing support growing exponentially, Karen chose to view the situation as an opportunity to lean more deeply into supporting the wellbeing of her clients and her community.

Today, Just the Tonic continues to grow and evolve into a deeply nurturing, Reiki-led wellbeing practice, supporting clients on both a physical and emotional level.

What has changed since we last spoke?

“The business feels calmer, more intentional and more sustainable than ever before.”

Over the last five years, Just the Tonic has evolved significantly, moving into a more holistic and wellbeing-led practice. Treatments such as massage and hot stone therapy have been gently adapted to weave in the benefits of Reiki and sound healing.

Alongside this shift, Karen is currently completing her Breathwork Facilitator training, further deepening her ability to support nervous system regulation, emotional release and inner calm. Breathwork is becoming a natural extension of her Reiki led work, helping clients slow down, reconnect with their bodies and feel more present within themselves.

Every change has come from listening closely to what her clients truly need. Self-care has become about more than just physical relief; it’s about finding a deep sense of rest that allows the body and mind to restore.

While massage and hot stone sessions remain popular, people experiencing burnout, anxiety and emotional overload are increasingly drawn to treatments that offer something deeper. That’s where Reiki, sound healing and breathwork come in.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient energy healing practice that originated in Japan. It supports emotional balance, inner calm and deep relaxation by working with the body’s natural energy system and encouraging the body’s own healing processes.

Reiki promotes deep relaxation and is particularly supportive for those who are:

  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • In need of a peaceful reset
  • Looking to improve their overall wellbeing

What is sound healing?

Sound healing is a holistic therapy that uses vibration and frequency to restore balance and harmony to the mind, body and spirit.

Resonant instruments such as singing bowls and tuning forks are used to guide clients into a deeply meditative state, helping calm the nervous system and promote relaxation.

Breathwork is also beginning to play a role within these sessions, encouraging clients to soften their breathing, release held tension and drop more fully into rest. When combined with Reiki and sound, it allows the body to settle into a deeply restorative state.

“My advice is to choose treatments based on what your body and mind have been asking for over time. Sometimes that’s a hands-on massage to ease tension, and at other times it’s stillness, sound and gentle energy work to help you fully switch off.”

Karen’s Signature Approach

Over the years, Karen has seen a growing need for deep relaxation, emotional support and nervous system regulation. This led her to weave Reiki and sound healing more deeply into her treatments, while also offering them as standalone therapies.

Increasingly, Just the Tonic is evolving into a Reiki led practice, with all offerings rooted in calm, presence and emotional wellbeing.

After achieving Reiki Master Teacher level, Karen now also teaches Reiki to those who feel called to explore energy healing further. These courses are offered in small groups in both Rugby and Warwick and are treated as sacred experiences of personal and spiritual growth.

“My proudest moment is seeing Just the Tonic evolve into a space that genuinely supports wellbeing, for myself and my clients.”

Women’s Circles

Karen held her first women’s circle on January 11th, bringing together a small group of women in a space built on warmth, trust and connection.

These circles are created for reflection, gentle healing and shared experience, allowing women to slow down and reconnect with themselves and one another.

Karen welcomes anyone who feels called to the slower rhythms of holding space with other women and honouring the ancient ritual of women’s circles.

Karen’s Top Tip

“One thing I wish more people understood is how powerful it can be to combine physical treatments with energy and sound-based therapies.”

A common misconception is that Reiki or sound healing must be separate. These therapies work beautifully together. Using singing bowls, tuning forks and gentle breathwork alongside Reiki helps calm the nervous system and encourages longer-lasting relaxation.

Proudest Moments

As the business has evolved, Karen has taken time to acknowledge and celebrate some key milestones, including:

  • Training to Reiki Master Teacher level
  • Launching Reiki Level 1, Level 2 and Master Level training courses
  • Developing her signature Reiki & Sound Healing treatment
  • Hosting her first Women’s Circle

Receiving heartfelt feedback from clients who feel calmer, more grounded and supported is always the biggest reward and a reminder that Just the Tonic is making the impact it was created to make.

Sharing Her Wisdom

In a world filled with hustle culture and constant pressure, Karen has chosen a different path.

“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success doesn’t have to mean being busy all the time. Listening to your intuition, honouring your energy and allowing your business to evolve naturally leads to deeper fulfilment and stronger client relationships.”

This philosophy is reflected in the way Karen holds space for her clients, offering a peaceful sanctuary of calm amidst busy lives.

What Her Clients Have to Say

What makes Just the Tonic unique is its calm, unhurried approach and focus on emotional as well as physical wellbeing. Every treatment is tailored to the individual and delivered with genuine care.

“Time stood still during my reflexology session. It was deeply calming and so relaxing.”

“I came away feeling truly relaxed and at peace with everything going on around me.”

“Karen really takes the time to get to know you. Her room is a little haven, and the massage was wonderful.”

What Does a Typical Day Look Like at Just the Tonic?

A typical day involves preparing the space with intention, cleansing the room with Palo Santo, welcoming clients for treatments or Reiki training, and ensuring each person leaves feeling calmer than when they arrived.

What Does the Future Hold?

Looking ahead, Karen is choosing to deepen her skills and refine her offerings rather than pursue rapid expansion.

Her Reiki training programmes will continue to grow, welcoming more people into the journey of energy healing. Treatments will increasingly focus on Reiki, sound healing and breathwork to support stress relief, menopause and emotional wellbeing.

Following the success of her first women’s circle, Karen plans to host regular circles to foster deeper community and connection.

“Everything I offer is rooted in sustainability, alignment and care – for both me and my clients.”
