Age UK Coventry & Warwickshire

MAKING MORE OF LIVE FOR OLDER PEOPLE IN WARWICKSHIRE

Age UK Coventry & Warwickshire (Age UK C&W) provide a wide range of support for over 50’s in our community. They have sixteen charity shops across Coventry & Warwickshire; you have probably found yourself browsing in at least one of them. These shops provide a huge portion of the funding Age UK C&W utilise to offer such a wide range of services in our community.

Through fundraising projects and donations, Age UK C&W provide free and confidential information and advice for the over 50’s, their loved ones and carers. This service provides over the phone (at the moment) advice and guidance on a wide range of issues, and is especially important at present in identifying and accessing practical and financial assistance. Free initial consultations with local solicitors particularly around Wills and Power of Attorney normally held at Age UK C and W offices remain available by phone.

Loneliness and isolation are major issues that can affect older people at all times but rarely more so than at present. Their Befriending Service has been adapted to provide regular contact to over 70s living alone by phone. Similarly Counselling services continue to assist over 65s or their carers in overcoming issues such as depression, anxiety and bereavement by phone or video link rather than the face to face service which normally applies

Without the incredible support of Age UK C and W many in our community would find themselves lonely and isolated. In addition to befriending and counselling, other important services offering friendship and socialising are available in more normal times including coffee mornings and lunch clubs. Their centres in Coventry and Rugby, though currently closed due to the pandemic, offer a range of interesting activities which, depending on location, can range from bingo to adult education, art to tai chi and computer sessions to walking football. Also, as Age UK C and W has become increasingly involved in dementia support, their Musical Memories Cafes in Warwickshire have proved very popular. These provide live music which not only helps in unlocking memories but also offers opportunities to socialise in informal surroundings. A carers support group is also available in Leamington Spa. Unfortunately these services are currently suspended.

With changes in our way of living still very current due to Covid-19, some of Age UK C&W’s services are limited, such as those encouraging group activities. Their hard work and dedication to keep people connected in the community continues and you can access up to date information on what services are available on their website. With that in mind however, all sixteen of their shops are currently closed which puts a huge strain on their funding, so please donate generously. You are helping to take care of your community.
